How to Choose Your Doona Weight: Warm vs Light Guide

Warm or Light? How to choose the right doona weight for the way you sleep.

The number one question we get, by far, is 'Which one do I get: Warm or Light?' So we figured it was time to answer it properly. Everything we know about choosing the right doona weight. Not from a spec sheet, but from actually talking to the people who sleep under them. We also created an interactive quiz to help you find your match made in heaven - all in under a minute.

What's actually different between Warm and Light?

Both weights use exactly the same materials. Same 800 fill power duck down. Same 95% ethical down content - the maximum legally allowable. Same OEKO-TEX certified cotton sateen shell. Same Puff System keeping everything evenly distributed. Same Puffle storage bag.

The only difference is how much down fill is inside.

The Light has less fill.. it's our lightweight doona, designed for warm sleepers and milder nights. The Warm has more fill.. it's our cosier weight doona, designed for people who feel the cold. You're not choosing between good and better, you're choosing between two versions of the same doona, based purely on your personal sleep style.

It's not about the season. It's about how you sleep.

This is the thing most people get wrong. They think Light is a summer doona and Warm is a winter doona and sure, that's part of it. But the bigger factor is how you sleep.

There are people who use the Light all year round, even in July, because they just run warm. They'd rather have a doona that breathes with them than one that bakes them. I also know people who pull out the Warm in March the second that sun starts setting earlier, as they feel it.

Our body is the variable. Not the calendar. And because everyone sleeps differently, there's no universal right answer, only the right answer for you.

The best doona for hot sleepers

Meet The Light. Designed for those who run warm. The one-leg-out sleepers, the midnight cover-kickers, the “why am I overheating at 3am?” crew.

It’s still everything you want from a doona. With 800 fill power, it’s lofty and airy, not flat or flimsy like a typical summer quilt. Natural duck down does what synthetics can’t. It breathes. It adapts. It works with your body, so you stay comfortable, not too warm.

If your room tends to hold heat, if you’re always running warm, if your doona ends up on the floor… or you sleep with the heater on, The Light will be your perfect match.

The best doona for cold sleepers

The Warm is for people who want to drown in cosy. More down, more loft, the kind of warmth that wraps around you without tipping into overheating- toasty, not stifling.

If you run cold, if you live in an old house with beautiful draughty windows, if your idea of a perfect winter night is cancelling plans on a cold rainy night and not moving until morning.. this is the one.

It's the doona that turns your bed into the cosiest place in the house. Which, honestly, is the whole point.

Still not sure which doona weight to choose?

We want to make it easy.. help you make an informed decision. We created a quiz that asks you the questions you'd already know the answers to - how you sleep, what you wear to bed, how your bedroom feels at night. Seven questions, twenty seconds and it'll tell you exactly which weight is yours. No GSM charts, no TOG ratings to decipher - just honest questions about how you actually live.

The two-doona setup

A lot of our customers have ended up owning both because once you've slept under one, you want the other for the opposite season.

Light goes on the bed when the evenings get warmer and the windows stay open. Warm comes out the first night you feel that chill creep in.. the one where you close everything up, put the kettle on and realise summer is officially over.

Your Puffle keeps whichever one's off-duty stored and lofty until you need it again. No vacuum bags, no plastic bins. Just breathable cotton canvas doing its job.

Can you use one doona all year round?

Some people do. If you sleep at a pretty even temperature year-round and your bedroom doesn't swing wildly between seasons, a Light can carry you through for warm sleepers, or a Warm for cold sleepers. Natural duck down regulates temperature in a way synthetic fills just can't. It breathes when you're warm and insulates when you're cold.

But if you live somewhere like Melbourne, where peak winter mornings hit 5 degrees and summer nights push 30 degrees celsius, having both weights means you're never thinking about it. You just sleep well. That's the ultimate setup we'd recommend.

The bottom line

There's no wrong answer here. Both weights are the same quality.. 95% ethical white duck down, 800 fill power, RDS certified, wrapped in silky OEKO-TEX cotton sateen. Same craftsmanship, same feeling of sinking in and not wanting to get back out.

The only question is how you sleep and now you know the answer.
