Let’s Talk Texture: Beyond the Thread Count Hype

Let’s Talk Texture: Beyond the Thread Count Hype

We’ve all seen the labels: 600 thread count, 800 thread count, even 1000 and we’ve all been told higher means better.

But the truth is it’s not that simple and things aren't always as they seem.

At Puff, we believe in honesty over hype. So let’s unpack the thread count myth and help you choose bedding that feels as good as it sounds.

Thread Count: What It Really Is

Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric both vertically and horizontally (for technical terms: warp and weft)

It sounds like a solid benchmark. But there’s a catch.. Higher thread count doesn’t always mean better quality.

Many ultra-high thread count fabrics use multi-ply yarns (thin threads twisted together), which can make sheets feel heavier, less breathable and not necessarily softer. It’s a numbers game, not a comfort guarantee.

So yes, too low (under 200) might feel rough and too high (over 600) is often just marketing.

What You Should Be Looking For

Instead of chasing big numbers, here’s what actually matters when shopping for bedding  or sheets:

Fibre Quality

Look for long-staple cotton. It’s smoother, stronger and resists pilling over time.

Weave Type

The weave affects how it feels:

Percale = crisp, matte, breathable (1-over-1-under weave)

Sateen = soft, smooth, slightly warmer (4-over-1-under weave)

Certifications

Labels like OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 mean the fabric is tested for harmful chemicals and is safe for sensitive skin and the planet.

Finishing

Natural or gently treated fabrics wear in beautifully over time. Avoid heavily processed, “slick-feel” sheets - it can be a red flag for contaminants and they lose this softness once washed.

Thread Count Sweet Spot? Aim for 300–500

This range strikes the right balance: enough density for a soft, durable feel, but still breathable and light.

“At Puff, we chose 400 thread count cotton sateen because it floats over the body and breathes beautifully through the night.” - Beck Finkel, Founder.

Why Puff Cares About Texture (and You Should Too)

We didn’t want to create “just another doona.” Every choice we made from fill to fabric was about creating comfort that’s honest, safe and considered luxury.

Here’s what we did:

- Used long-staple cotton for natural softness

- Certified OEKO-TEX® so it’s kind to skin and toxin-free

- Opted for 400TC sateen to balance silkiness and breathability

Because when your doona touches your skin every night you deserve to know it’s clean, breathable and crafted with care and importantly no nasties!

Final Thought

The next time you shop for bedding, don’t just read the number, feel the fabric. Ask questions. Check certifications. Look for balance, not buzzwords and if you ever want to know exactly what you're sleeping under, we’ll always tell you.

Because at Puff, luxury starts with truth.
